Dear Professor Marits,
We chose this topic because we felt it would
be an interesting topic to do research on and we wanted to learn more about sexual harassment. We are all women who have the
potential of being sexually harassed so we were all eager to do our part of the research so we could learn more about it.
Additionally, we all knew that sexual harassment existed but never knew much about the topic. I
feel we couldn’t have chosen a better topic.
There
were many interesting facts that we found out about while researching sexual harassment. An interesting fact that we learned
about sexual harassment was that it can be very subtle but can have a huge impact on a sexual harassment court case. We also
learned that sexual harassment is categorized into two forms: quid quo pro and hostile work environment. Furthermore, a lot
of the research that we did gave us more information on what to do when you are in a position where you are sexually harassed.
One of the main things that were interesting to me was the statistics on sexual harassment.
One of them said that males claim sexual harassment more then females, which I thought was bizarre because if I hear
about sexual harassment it usually happens to the women. Another thing that amazed
us was how they said that most cases that deal with sexual harassment still go unreported, as many as ninety five percent
of the incidents may not be brought to light or ever talked about. Our research
also gave us understandings of what to do if either of us is ever in a situation were we are being sexually harassed.
Through the summary and response assignments
and the group project, we were able to get a deeper look into all the struggles that women had to face in order to get to
where they are now. I had always known that the road to fairness and equality
wasn’t an easy one; but I never knew just how hard that road actually was. Many
of those women from the stories that we read faced great difficulties. Many of
stories were similar. Most of the stories revolved around women who experienced
abuse or discrimination simply because they were women. We have heard stories
of women being treated unfairly in the workplace only because the men they worked with didn’t like the idea of having
women in charge of them. Men believed that we were able to gain more knowledge
about feminism and its perspectives. But most of all, as us being women the stories
left us with an even greater respect for those women who fought so hard for everything that we have longed for since the beginning. Which is to be treated with respect by everyone and to be treated equally just like
everyone else.
